TURA: Hundreds of people from Williamnagar in East Garo Hills on Tuesday participated in a public rally cum procession organised by various organisations from the district demanding that work on the Ronggap Bridge at Baija should resume and completed at the earliest.
The construction of the said bridge was abandoned a decade ago and there have been no signs of work resuming till date even as organisations from the district have approached concerned authorities in the past. The public rally cum procession is as part of the second phase of agitation after several others failed to evoke a response from the concerned authority as well as the government.
The public meeting was held from 11 am at Rongrenggre Playground after which, the gathering led by leaders of organizations like the GSU (CEC), Federation for A’chik Freedom (FAF), Indigenous Citizens Forum of Simsanggre (ICFS), All India Garo Union (AIGU), Sumo and Pick Up Association and others marched from the venue via Soil Bazar, Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Science Hall Road, PWD Office and back to the starting venue.
Speaking after the programme President of FAF, Jintu Ch Marak said that the imposition of Forest Rules against the construction when inches remain for its completion was an act of some vested interests within the department.
“We are warning the government that if it still remains silent on the issue, we will intensify our agitations. We will never give up and continue our protests until the issue is resolved,” the FAF president added.
