MAWKYRWAT/JOWAI: World Food Day, which is organised every year on October 16 to raise awareness on the issues of poverty and hunger, was observed in many parts of the state, including South West Khasi Hills and West Jaintia Hills, on Tuesday.
The District Agriculture Office in Mawkyrwat organized a programme on the theme ‘Our actions are our future’ at the Multipurpose Hall, Laitlawsang.
Deputy Commissioner Isawanda Laloo was the chief guest and she encouraged integrated farming and multi cropping to enhance production. Laloo said the day was observed to remind farmers on the need to increase production to eradicate hunger by 2030. She exhorted the farmers to take up organic farming.
The programme was followed by a technical session in which District Horticulture Officer G Nongrang was the resource person.
In Jowai, the programme was at Dulong Indoor Stadium. District Agriculture Officer W Marbaniang said the day calls for sharing innovative ideas to increase food productivity and reiterated the need for integrated farming.
A seminar on traditional fruits and vegetables and their nutritional values was also organised.
World Food Day was also observed by the Shillong Diocese of Believers, Eastern Church during a programme held at TB Hospital, Mawbah, East Khasi Hills on Tuesday. The Women Fellowship Department of the Church also conducted World Food Day programme at Labor Colony, Umiam, Meghalaya and distributed food to the children.
