MLA wants special school for children with intellectual disability

NONGSTOIN: Local MLA and chairman of State Law Commission, Macmillan Byrsat expressed disappointment over lack of special school for children with intellectual disability and also the non-existence of District Disability Rehabilitation Centre in West Khasi Hills and assured to take up the matter with the Government.
Speaking at the inauguration programme of a week-long on Identification and Assessment programme for Children with Intellectual Disability as chief guest on Monday, Byrsat said, “No one is born perfect.”
The programme was organised by the District Mission Coordinator, SSA at Trysem Hall DC office in Nongstoin. The MLA encouraged parents to come forward without being afraid or ashamed of their children with disabilities to seek help and care provided by the Government.
“Disabled persons have every right to enjoy their livelihood as normal human being,” he said while calling upon K.L. Nongbri Deputy Commissioner and Chairman SSA, who was the guest of honour, said that the objective of the programme is to identify and assess the children with intellectual disability, and orientation of stakeholders regarding early detection and intervention to develop their skill.
Thamarai. E, lecturer Physiotherapy CRC, Davangere, Surjeet Kaur, steno cum accountant, Dr. Amirata Sahay, Assistant Professor in Rehabilitation Psychology and G. Srinivasulu, Lecture in vocational counsellings Employment NEIPID, Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment attended the programme as resource persons.
Others who spoke were M. Kharbangar, State IE Coordinator, R. Khongwang DMC and DSEO, Eva Nongbet, Nodal Education Officer, L.Syiemlieh SDSEO & Jt. DMC SSA.
