SHILLONG: Amid all the awareness programmes about energy saving, Meghalaya Government is working on a creative and sustainable way of lighting up rural villages through a cost effective and simple method called Hydroger.

Informing this, State Programme Implementation and Monitoring Committee, Chairman Saleng Sangma said that after the success of the pilot project in Mawkyrwat, the committee through the soil and water department was proposing for 2000 hydrogers covering over 2000 villagers in the state.

With one Hydroger in a village, 50 households can get electricity.

Stating that it is like a revolution, Sangma said that if Hydrogers could be installed in 2000 villages it would provide electricity to one lakh villagers.

He informed that he would inaugurate one of the Hydroger projects very soon in the state, adding the hydroger is a blessing for the BPL families, cost effective and eco-friendly.

He informed that around Rs five lakh was needed for a unit of Hydroger to function and if the idea materialised, menace of stealing of electricity could be addressed to a great extent.

It may be mentioned that access to pico hydro units (Hydrogers) will provide energy required for lighting up wayside amenities, juicing, milk chilling plant and poultry by the poor villagers with zero percent maintenance

In addition to this, the department, has also proposed for a cable car project in Mawkyrwat and Sangma feels that if this project sees through, tourism will grow in leaps and bounds
