SHILLONG: The People’s Democratic Front (PDF) hit the nadir on Tuesday when four of its district council members, including Grace Mary Kharpuri, resigned over fallacies in organising the party.
The resignations come at a time when the one-year-old party has set up a special committee to look into the internal squabble.
The four MDCs — Kharpuri, James Sylliang, Blanding Warjri and Latiplang Kharkongor — said they were “weary of the way the party is being organised”.
They also said their suggestions were not considered when the new leader of the party in the district council was selected after Syiem stepped down as KHADC chief executive member.
Kharkongor said the rift among the MDCs surfaced when Syiem wanted the PDF MLAs to withdraw support to the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance.
“We opposed this decision as there were burning issues of Them Metor and MUDA which needed to be dealt with. Moreover, the PDF MLA is also the Urban Affairs Minister (Hamlet Dohling),” he said.
Kharkongor, Sylliang and Warjri were annoyed that they were suspended from the party when they extended their support to the executive committee led by HS Shylla  but the party refused to take action against the five MDCs who recently extended support to the same leadership.
The five MDCs who recently supported Shylla are Banteidor Lyngdoh, Hadrian Lyngdoh, Morning Mawsor, Arbinus Lyngdoh and James Ban Basaiawmoit.
The four MDCs said they would never return to the party and remain independent for the time being.
The development jeopardises the political career of Syiem who lost the Assembly election, the by-poll in Ranikor as well as the chair in KHADC.
