SHILLONG: The South West Khasi Youth Federation (SWKYF) has urged the chief minister to upgrade Mawkyrwat Civil Sub-Division to a district.

In a statement issued here on Monday, SWKYF president Basan P Lyngdoh said the chief minister must translate his recent promise into action. “The CM had recently made a statement to add one more district to the state to ease the unemployment burden which is abundant in the state”, Lyngdoh claimed.“The CM promise should be upheld and not turn into one of those mere promises which are forgotten as soon as the elections are over”, Lyngdoh said.

“The people in Mawkyrwat area have been waiting for this for a long time and at the moment, we don’t want to listen to anyone but the answer from the government”, Lyngdoh stated. Meanwhile, the organisation has demanded the state government to name the new district as “South West Khasi Hills District” stating “This area is lacking in so many aspects and it is high time for the government to do something”, Lyngdoh said. The youth organisation president also informed that South West Khasi Hills District will include all those areas falling under Mawkyrwat C&RD Block and Ranikor C&RD Block which is around 2000 Sq Km with more than two lakh population.
