SHILLONG: The increase in the number of private universities in the state has developed a sense of fear among the students and parents as most of these universities have failed to deliver as per the expectations of the public.
This problem has become a matter of concern not only of the government, parents and students but also the local NGOs who have expressed disappointment over the lack of performance by these private universities.
The local NGOs including CSWO (Irene), Hynniewtrep National Youth Federation (HNYF), Khasi Jaintia Labour Union (KJLU) and others on Tuesday called upon the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills, Sanjay Goyal to intervene into the functioning of the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India (ICFAI) University in Shillong.
The NGOs claimed that since 2010, the affiliation with ICFAI, Hyderabad was severed and thus since then the centre in Shillong is functioning on its own leaving the students in a dilemma as their degrees are not recognized anywhere.
The move came after the CSWO received a complaint letter from the students studying BBA in the 3rd Semester in the university who admitted that there are many shortfalls on the part of the university which include lack of permanent campus, non-completion of the courses offered within the stipulated time frame, “non-qualified” B-School faculty besides others.
Accordingly, the NGOs conducted an inspection at the university which functions at the rented building at Laitumkhrah and found out that the complaints sent to them were true.
“This university lacks proper classrooms, faculties and many others. They claimed that the university has been recognized by UGC but it is not so”, CSWO general secretary C Wanniang said adding that they even lied about the number of students studying there saying there were around 315 but later found out that there were hardly 200 students.
The NGOs also claimed that the University in Shillong does not have the approval of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for starting a Bachelor of Computer Application (BCA) course.
Meanwhile, it may be recalled that Meghalaya Governor RS Mooshahary has on many occasions raised a question about this issue and asked the respective universities to perform as per the expectation of the people.
