SHILLONG: The idea mooted by the UDP to have a common candidate of the MDA for Shillong and Tura Lok Sabha seats has hit hurdles even before the scheduled meeting of the coalition on Monday to discuss the matter.
The BJP from Garo Hills has decided to field candidates for both Selsella by-poll and Tura Lok Sabha seat.
A meeting in this regard was held on Saturday at the regional office of BJP in Tura presided over by Rikman G Momin, the state vice president of the party.
Pramod Koch, the general secretary of BJP, was also present on the occasion.
The meeting sought the opinion of the members present for Selsella by-election and Tura Lok Sabha seat.
A senior party leader from Garo Hills informed that a resolution was adopted to send the minutes of the decision to field candidates in both the seats to the state president of the party.
A 10-member committee was also formed to pursue the matter with state leaders in Shillong and central leaders in Delhi.
Earlier, BJP leader and Cabinet Minister AL Hek had favoured the idea of the party contesting both Shillong and Tura parliamentary seats but left the final decision to the central leaders.
With the BJP planning to go its own way, the discussion for a common candidate may be limited to only NPP and UDP.
