SHILLONG: A day after the Opposition leader, Mukul Sangma attacked Meghalaya government over the discontinuation of Megha Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS), the Health and Family Welfare Minister, A L Hek on Wednesday said that the scheme was currently on a Policy Break and had not been stopped.
He said that the State Government, in fact had made endeavour to continue MHIS in convergence with the National scheme, Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) and the upcoming scheme would bring about further improvements and an enhanced coverage of Rs 5 lakhs per household as compared to the previous cover of Rs 2.8 lakhs per household.
He said that the department is in the process of selecting the Insurance Company for the next phase of MHIS policy period with a re-tender issued on October 26 even as he added that they were looking to finalise the selection of insurance company at the earliest.
He recalled that during the transition from MHIS – Phase II to MHIS – Phase III, there were
similar challenges faced due to which there was a policy break from November 1, 2016 to the June 30, 2017
Earlier, the Leader of Opposition had asked Meghalaya Government to immediately revive the MHIS while terming the Government as incompetent.
