SHILLONG: Following several complaints from the residents of Amlarem Sub-Division on the poor show of the office of MeECL, Myntdu Leshka Hydel Project (MLHEP), the Jaiñtia Youth Federation (JYF) conducted a surprise visit recently.

The organisation said they found the office was empty and the Chief Project Manager Elias Lyngdoh absent from his post. Only one or two casual staff from that area were present, JYF publicity & information secretary, PP Lyngdoh said.

Questioning the absence of the staff from their duty the JYF said this office was created to provide services to the people of that area.

“But it seems like the work here is done perfunctorily just to avoid controversies at the time of withdrawal of salary. The staff are not bothered about the overall development of the district which is totally dependent on the Rs 900 crore project of the MeECL,” Lyngdoh said in a statement.

President of the JYF central body, P Majaw, expressed disappointment at the near-empty office of the MLHEP without any staff to help the public in need especially those coming from distant villages.

“How will the district prosper when the staff attend office in the breach? The government should take stern action against such employees who draws their salary without performing their duties,” Majaw said.

Meanwhile, when asked about the daily work schedule at the office, a staff of the MLHEP said the office remains empty almost everyday right from the CPM, DAO downwards except for a few casual employees.

The JYF has also warned all Government departments in Jaintia Hills to perform their duty and fulfil public expectations failing which the Union will be compelled to note down the names of the staff and officers and report to the higher authorities.
