Guwahati: A day after a leopard cub was run over by a train in Assam’s main city Guwahati, another leopard was rescued from Geetanagar area of the city on Thursday.
The leopard was spotted under a parked car by local resident, who tried to chase it away.
The leopard moved out of its hiding spot initially but later returned and took shelter under the car again.
Forest and police department officials were alerted, who trapped the leopard with the help of the locals.
It has been taken to the state zoo here.
A leopard cub was run over by a train at Bamunimaidam area of the city on Wednesday.
Thursday’s incident is the seventh instance of rescue or citing of leopards in the city since last month.
At least four leopards have been rescued, one cub killed and two more sighted at various places of the city since the beginning of January.
Decreasing forest cover around Guwahati and encroachment of forest land has forced the animals out to human habitations in search of food.
Meanwhile, one person was injured by a leopard at Meleng tea estate in Assam’s Jorhat district when locals tried to push it back to the jungles on Thursday.
The incident occured when two full grown leopards strayed out of the jungles. When panicked locals tried to push them back and one of the pounced on them and injured him, forest department sources said. (Agencies)
