SHILLONG: If you think the city is under constant surveillance and incidents of crime can be nipped in the bud, then it is time you should be concerned because not all CCTV cameras are functional.
Some surveillance cameras, which have been installed under Safe Secure Shillong project, are not working and NECTAR, the company responsible for maintenance of the CCTVs, has also washed its hands of the problem as its contract with the government is over, officials in the police department said.
The officials said they have informed the government about the non-functional CCTV cameras. But they did not reveal the number of non-functional cameras.
The city police had earlier submitted a proposal to the state government to install CCTV cameras in 30 more locations.
The government wants advanced cameras and surveillance system in the city and the 30 CCTV cameras installed earlier are currently being operated by Shillong police.
The CCTV surveillance helped the city police identify rioters earlier this year when SP City S Rynjah, other police personnel and a magistrate were attacked by a mob at Mawkhar. Fourteen persons were arrested after they were identified from a CCTV footage.
