SHILLONG: The UDP, a major ally in the NPP-led MDA government, is prepared for any consequences which might follow its resolution to field a common candidate from Shillong Lok Sabha seat but it is also confident that its move will not have any adverse impact on the coalition.
UDP senior leader Allantry Franklin Dkhar has once again refuted misgivings about the alliance saying that synergy among the MDA partners “is better this time than the previous alliances”.
Reacting to a query, Dkhar said the opposition would try to topple the government as it is their work but the alliance on the other hand will continue cementing their ties.
When pointed out that there may be misunderstanding over Lok Sabha candidates, Dkhar said the party is ready for it. However, “in a family, misunderstandings can happen but it should be seen as an opportunity to open up and further cement ties”, he added.
The UDP leader asserted that the MDA coordination committee “always meets up and addresses all issues”.
There are reports that UDP leaders in Garo Hills are keen to field BG Momin as the party’s candidate from Tura seat.
But sources in the party in Shillong said the UDP “is not aware of such move”.
The sources added that “if talks failed for a common candidate, anything is possible”.
