GUWAHATI: Opposition Congress has demanded a judicial inquiry into the recnt killing of five persons by unidentified gunmen at Kherbari in the Dhola area of Tinsukia district.

A delegation led by Opposition leader in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia visited the aggrieved families of the victims on Monday and offered their condolences.

“A judicial inquiry must be instituted to probe the cold-blooded killings. The state government should take bold steps to protect the lives and property of all sections of society in Assam,” Saikia told a section of media.

The delegation to Dhola also comprised legislators Rupjyoti Kurmi, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha and Durga Bhumij, Sivasagar DCC president Sushanta Borgohain, APCC general secretary Pradyut Bhuyan, Tinsukia DCC president Jayanta Kalita and other Congress leaders.

The Congress team’s visit comes a day after a four-member Trinamool Congress delegation from Bengal, led by parliamentary leader, Derek O’Brien, visited the families of the victims and expressed solidarity with the kin.

Saikia further demanded strict and unbiased action against those who had made inflammatory comments and irresponsible statements which might have led to the incident.

“Besides, any official found guilty of negligence in connection with the incident should be brought to book,” he said.

The Congress leader rued that the state government did not pay heed to the warnings prior to the incident and remained a silent spectator.

“Vote-bank politics has caused divisions in society and led to deterioration of the law-and-order situation in the state,” he said.
