SHILLONG:  Meghalaya Government has decided to appoint R Chandranathan as the new Director General of Police (DGP).

A notification issued by the government on Tuesday revealed the name R Chandranathan as the full-fledged DGP of Meghalaya.

Prior to his new assignment, Chandranathan, an IPS officer of 1986 batch (Assam-Meghalaya cadre), was serving as the Special Director General (Railways) in Assam.

The UPSC had on October 1 cleared the names of RP Agarwal, who was temporarily made the Meghalaya DGP, and senior police officers from Assam R Chandranathan and AK Sinha Casshyap.

There were adverse media reports in Assam about certain irregularities and FIRs against Chandranathan,

It may be mentioned that after the resignation of Swaraj Bir Singh as the Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) no full-fledged DGP was appointed in the State.

Earlier, the move of the NPP-led MDA Government to bring in Assam’s senior police officer Chandranathn as the new full-fledged  had received flak on the ground that Meghalaya has senior police officers to head the police force in the State.
