Unique initiative makes traffic cops smile on Diwali

SHILLONG: Make Someone Smile, an initiative started by Bangalorean Priyankur Nandy, distributed sweets among traffic police personnel on the occasion of Diwali on Wednesday.
Nandy and two of his companions, Barna Nandi & Niccki J, started going around the city at 9 am and distributed sweets and thanked police personnel.
“It indeed was a prize when you hear one of them asking ‘can I give a hug too’, ‘you guys are doing wonderful job’,” a statement to the media said.
Nandy said he collected Rs 3,000 from friends and relatives for the purpose.
Meanwhile, local NGO SPARK celebrated eco-friendly Diwali with underprivileged children in the city on Wednesday.
“As Diwali is the festival of lights so through this little initiative, we intended to bring light into the lives of these children and provide them a platform where they can enjoy to the fullest and forget all the burdens on their tender shoulders,” the SPARK said in a press statement.
The SPARK team lit lamps and offered prayers with the children.
Founder and president of SPARK, Shima Modak, informed the children about the essence of Diwali and the purpose of celebrating the same without any kind of discrimination or individual differences.
The NGO also organised games, dance performances and other recreational activities.
Food was distributed to the children and as many as 200 children participated in the programme at Anjali, Mawlynrei and Rangmen Centres of SPARK.
