GUWAHATI: In what appears to be a freak mishap, two persons sustained minor injuries following an “explosion” after one of them removed the safety pin of a stun grenade that was found lying “abandoned” in the Jhargaon area under Jagiroad police station around 4pm on Saturday, police sources said here.
“Sushil Sarkar (45) and Sagar Mandal (25) sustained minor injuries. Going into the details it was found that the F/98 Battalion of BSF, which was engaged in the adjacent area in connection with NRC duty had lost one stun grenade yesterday. They were also searching for the same with the help of local people. The grenade which was lying in an abandoned condition was picked up by Sushil Sarkar. He thereafter removed the safety pin with the help of pliers, as a result of which it exploded,” a press statement issued by the chief public relations officer, Assam Police, said on Saturday evening.
Police reached the spot immediately on receipt of information. The injured persons were taken to hospital for first aid and subsequently discharged.
A stun grenade, also known as flash grenade or sound bomb, is a non-lethal explosive device used by security forces to temporarily disorient an enemy’s senses.
“The remnants of the stun grenade were seized and higher officials of BSF have been informed. The situation is normal,” the statement said.
The stun grenade was issued to constable Arvind Kumar of F/98 Battalion BSF.
