Shillong: Environmental Watch and Management Institute, Guwahati, in collaboration with Shillong Chapter, Indian Science Congress Association, Kolkata and NEHU, Shillong organised a two day national seminar cum exhibition on “Earthquake Hazards: Perception, Mitigation and Management” at Science Seminar Hall, North Eastern Hill University, Shillong (NEHU) on November 9 and 10 sponsored by Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India and Shillong Chapter, Indian Science Congress Association, Kolkata.

In the first day programme, Prof. Devesh Walia, Professor and Head, Department of Environmental Studies, NEHU delivered the welcome address. Dr. Bhupendra Talukdar, President, Environmental Watch and Management Institute briefed on the recent activities and future vision of the Environmental Watch and Management Institute. Prof. H. Lamin, Pro-Vice Chancellor, NEHU, Shillong in his address as chief guest stressed on the importance of awareness among the public to reduce the destruction by an earthquake.

He said that though we cannot control the earthquake but we can reduce the disaster, any day anywhere by sharing our knowledge and provide awareness to the masses.70 participants including teachers, students, engineers, professors, research scholars and policy makers from Ministry of Earth Science, Government of India,  Gauhati University, Geological Survey of India, WWF, North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, Tourism Department, Royal School of Engineering & Technology, Guwahati, Assam Engineering College, Guwahati, Dimoria College, Khetri, Bajali College were present at the event. Geological Survey of India and Environmental Watch and Management Institute took part in the exhibition which was inaugurated by Pro-Vice Chancellor of NEHU.
