MAWKYRWAT: Ahead of the upcoming elections to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), the United Democratic Party (UDP) Mawkyrwat circle has suffered a major blow after many leaders quit the party and are set to join the HSPDP.
Sources from UDP informed that differences within the party leadership at the circle level surfaced after the UDP decided to put up its own candidate instead of supporting HSPDP in Mawkyrwat constituency.
Many leaders were of the opinion that they should continue with the UDP-HSPDP alliance and support the candidate of the HSPDP.
“Many leaders from the circle level down to the primary level have decided to leave the party because they know that the party has no chance in the upcoming council elections as most of the supporters had already joined the HSPDP in the last Assembly polls,” a leader of the UDP said.
The UDP leader also informed that the UDP leaders and supporters are waiting for the HSPDP Mawkyrwat constituency to organise a meeting to formally welcome them as they wanted to join the HSPDP as a team.
UDP had decided to put up Anvil Lyngdoh, president of the UDP Mawkyrwat circle as the candidate for the upcoming election.
