TURA: At a time when the whole of Tura town is reeling under acute water shortage due to shutting down of the pumping machines for repair works, water pipes supplying the precious commodity continue to leak profusely releasing hundreds of gallons which could have been saved.

At the centre of the town and opposite the district auditorium in Ringrey a large water pipe has been releasing hundreds of gallons of water all throughout the night for the last one week with neither the PHE nor the Garo Hills District Council staff capping the leak.

The leaking pipe is right in the front gate of the new Tura Municipal Board market complex that is presently under construction.

Out of the five water pumps under Tura Phase II water supply scheme only one is functioning with the others sent for overhauling. Despite measures being announced for citizens to sparingly use the water that is now getting released just once a day, the authorities remain completely oblivious to the large scale waste of much needed water for the town.

Interestingly, the leaking water pipes are being found at almost all localities with one just across the home of the PHE superintending engineer at Sampalgre that has allegedly not been capped since November, last year. Some of the localities in Tura like Brahampara, Tura main bazar,

Hawakhana, and several parts of upper and proper Chandmari continue to experience acute shortage since the past several weeks even as water is allowed to flow down drains and roads from leaking pipes.
