SHILLONG: UDP leader Donkupar Roy said the party was open to fielding a candidate for Tura Lok Sabha seat.
He, however, said the matter is yet to be decided by the party.
Sources said the party leaders in Garo Hills are keen to put up a candidate and they even suggested the name of former minister B G Momin.
According to Roy, there will be further discussions before the UDP makes a decision to put up the candidate in Tura.
For the Shillong seat, the UDP had proposed former MLA Jemino Mawthoh as the common candidate to be decided by the MDA coalition.
There is already a division in the MDA over common candidate as the BJP is set to put up a candidate.
The HSPDP has named its Mawkyrwat legislator Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar as the common candidate.
Other parties will suggest the names of candidates to the MDA in the next meeting.
Attack on activists
The UDP president said the party would wait for the outcome of police inquiry into the assault on activists Agnes Kharshiing and Amita Sangma before suggesting the government to carry out an independent probe.
“We have UDP ministers in the Cabinet and they can take up the matter when the need arises,” he said.
Session this month
He said the special Assembly session to rectify the mistakes in the earlier resolution on recognition to Khasi-Garo language will be held within this month but the date is yet to be decided.
