SHILLONG: All is not well in Garo Hills when it comes to healthcare.
Speaking to a section of reporters, Rajabala MLA Azad Zaman said there is no intensive care unit in Garo Hills and people have to go to Guwahati or Shillong.
“Another great concern is that we don’t have a medical college. I hope a medical college comes up. The Bhaitbari CHC building and staff quarters were being constructed but it was stopped, and I had pursued the matter,” he said.
“Many people are affected. My area is a low lying area and is prone to malaria. Because of impure water, people are suffering from typhoid, gastro-intestinal disorders. We don’t have sufficient specialist doctors and to run an ICU we need specialist doctors,” he added.
As for bad road condition, Zaman said he has been pursuing the progress of Agia, Medhipara, Phulbari, Tura (AMPT) road.
“The AMPT road is not only the lifeline of Garo Hills, it connects Assam and international road also. Some funds have been sanctioned from the national highway and work is going on although it is slow,” he added.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong had recently visited the place.
