SHILLONG: Police are yet to arrest the masterminds involved in the attack on social activist Agnes Kharshiing and her colleague Amita Sangma.
Around 30 to 40 people were involved in the attack on the activists at Sohshrieh, East Jaintia Hills, on November 8 and only three persons have been arrested so far.
According to sources, police have the pictures and details of the main culprits involved in the attack but are slow in acting.
Police have corroborated the information with various sources and identified some of the persons directly involved in the attack.
Earlier, Gilbert AL Marshillong, the deputy SP (headquarters), East Jaintia Hills, who is probing the matter, had visited NEIGRIHMS to record Sangma’s statement.
Both Kharshiing and Sangma are being treated at the hospital.
During a visit on Saturday, Sangma reiterated that since police have alleged nexus with coal barons, the progress of inquiry is slow and the only way to find out the truth is by way of a CBI inquiry.
Sangma is the petitioner in the case filed in the High Court of Meghalaya demanding CBI inquiry into the incident and Court will take up the matter on November 27.
According to sources, the first arrest of two persons who did not have any direct links with the incident was just to calm down the situation.
Later, a lady was picked only to be released later.
Though a coal exporter was arrested on Saturday night, police will find it tough to arrest others since many of the accused have absconded, sources added.
However, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Home Minister James Sangma vowed that police would go after the culprits and ruled out any high-level probe.
