From Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma arrived here on Monday to participate in a meeting convened by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to discuss the contentious issue of Transport Subsidy Scheme (TSS).The meeting, to be chaired by Commerce, Industries and Textile Minister Anand Sharma on Tuesday, would be attended by the DoNER Minister Paban Singh Ghatowar, Chief Ministers of Northeastern and special category states like Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and West Bengal. The chief ministers of special category states have been invited since they are also demanding similar package. But this has been opposed by the NE states since they will walk away with all investment due to their locational advantages. The N-E states are upset over attempts to dilute the ambitious North East Industrial and Investment Promotion Policy (NEIIPP). Not only the Chief Ministers but also the MPs from the region and industrial bodies have opposed such move and presented memoranda to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. The meeting would discuss introduction of an efficient, transparent subsidy scheme, introduction of additional rail heads at Guwahati, Tinsukia and Dimapur
