SHILLONG: KHADC chief executive member HS Shylla said on the second day of the council session on Wednesday that the Executive Committee cannot take any decision on uranium mining.
People’s Democratic Front MDC Hadrian Lyngdoh moved a resolution in the House to discuss the problems faced by people in West and South West Khasi Hills owing to poor roads. He pointed out that every time construction started, there were protests by various pressure groups which fear uranium mining in the area.
Asserting that the Rs 25 crore assured by the previous Executive Committee led by PN Syiem will not be continued, Shylla said, “The Executive Committee cannot take any decision with regard to uranium. It is up to the House whether to grant NOC for the road or not.”
“As per the central government, the two-lane is not for uranium mining, the portion that leads to Wahkaji was cut off.”
“It is from Nongstoin-Wahkaji, Wahkaji to Phlangdiloin and Phlangdiloin to Ranikor,” he added.
Earlier, Shylla had refused to issue no-objection certificate for the Nongstoin-Wahkaji-Phlangdiloin-Ranikor road citing uranium issue. He had said before granting NOC to the two-lane road project, he would meet Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong.
KHADC chairman Teinwell Dkhar said on Wednesday, “This is a motion and let it be so. If there is a need, a resolution can be introduced.”
