SHILLONG: The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) has questioned the state investigating agency’s sincerity in putting the attackers of CSWO Agnes Kharshiing and her companion Amita Sangma behind bars.
The CLP, which met here on Wednesday, wondered whether authorities were trying to destroy the evidence of the assault in East Jaintia Hills and said it would urge the government to ensure that the accused are punished.
“Law must prevail or the situation will embolden the criminals. We don’t want our state to be known as a place where evils rule and good get defeated,” CLP leader Mukul Sangma told mediapersons after the meeting.
Sangma said the situation in the state “reflects that the government has a tendency to align with criminals”.
When asked whether CLP supports the idea of an independent inquiry into the attack, the opposition leader said, “When instances are indicating that something is happening in coal mine areas, it calls for a serious effort on the part of the government to look at available measures and respond to the situation.”
He added that the government “cannot be complacent and in denial mode” about illegal coal mining and the opposition will not accept its incompetence and lack of commitment to solve the issue.
“The party will continue to draw the attention of the government to ensure that illegality in coal mining is not allowed… Our state should not be seen as one where illegalities can happen and people who commit illegal things go scot free,” the former chief minister reiterated.
