NONGSTOIN: The West Khasi Hills District unit of the Khasi Students’Union (KSU), under the leadership of General Secretary Rishot Skhembor Kharbani and Assistant Organising Secretary Arki Marwein, met West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner T Lyngwa with a demand to speed up the setting up of an entry and exit point in Athiabari.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Kharbani said that during a recent meeting with the chief executive member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, the union took up the issue of construction and implementation of an entry and exit point in Athiabari.
Kharbani also said that the entry and exit point will prove to be a strong deterrent against illegal migration especially in Athiabari which is the gate way for illegal migrants.
Earlier, Lyngwa told the union members that the entry and exit point in Athiabari was under process and that land compensation was the main reason for the delay in starting work.
The deputy commissioner also informed that the construction of the exit and entry point will move forward after compensation is paid to those who gave land for the check point.
Meanwhile, the Khasi Students’ Union has demanded that the state government speed up the payment of land compensation so that construction can be started as soon as possible and urged locals, especially the headmen, to cooperate with the administration to expedite the process.
