SHILLONG: The Department of Sociology in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) St. Edmund’s College Shillong held a film screening entitled “Because we did not choose” by Wanphrang Diengdoh at the College Auditorium on Saturday .
This was followed by a discussion on the film and the making of the film. More than 300 students, including faculty members attended the programme. Wanphrang Diengdoh spoke at length on the research and filming besides travelling places. Sylvanus Lamare, who himself authored the book ‘ The role of the Khasi Labour Corps during World War 1’ spoke on the contributions of the Khasi , Jaintia and Garos in the World War 1 as Labour Corps and the role the missionaries played to take these men of valour to the battle front. Others who spoke include Prof G. Kharkongor, IQAC Coordinator, Prof Iamon Syiem, Prof Finley Syngai, Prof J. Wahlang among others.
It was a consensus feeling that local history and especially the rich cultural and historical diversity of the state find place in the college and university text books and that people can commemorate a day to remember the journey made by our people from the state to the war theatre in France and Mesopotamia 100 years ago.
