SHILLONG: The Assam-Meghalaya chief ministerial level border talks will take more time as the neighbouring state is yet to give any date for holding a meeting.
In the recent past, there were a few cases of border skirmishes which were dealt with at the level of the deputy commissioners of respective districts in Assam and Meghalaya.
A senior government official said in the past, Meghalaya had written to Assam to hold chief secretary level talks as precursor to the chief ministerial level talks but in vain as there was no response from Assam.
The last chief ministerial level meeting between former chief minister Mukul Sangma and his Assam counterpart Sarbananda Sonowal was held on April 1 last year and the decision was to have a chief secretary level meeting and discuss about a boundary commission.
The April 1 chief ministerial level meeting was held after seven years when Sangma met Tarun Gogoi.
Though the Meghalaya Assembly elections and other assignments had delayed the next chief ministerial level meeting, there is a demand from several quarters to resume border talks.
The state government had in the past submitted relevant documents to Assam to substantiate Meghalaya’s claim over 12 areas of difference.
On Thursday last, a border discussion was held in Nongpoh chaired by Ri Bhoi deputy commissioner R M Kurbah which only dealt with the implementation of projects in the border and to maintain peace.
