Tura: The two suspected militants belonging to outlawed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) who were killed in a wee-hour encounter on Monday under Lakhipur Police Station in Goalpara district of Assam by a joint team of the Army and police have been identified with one of the deceased being a senior member of the outfit.

Police had shot dead the two militants after they opened fire and tried to flee on a motorcycle when asked to stop. Two pistols were recovered from the encounter site. Garo Hills police identified the two as senior member Laben Sangma alias Chenang of Resu in East Garo Hills and Sengsrang Sangma of Purakhasia in West Garo Hills district.

Sengsrang Sangma joined the GNLA last year while Chenang is a hardcore member from the first batch. He was ‘deputy area commander’ of Resu under Rakkam and later promoted to work under ‘finance secretary’ Reding.

Police said Chenang is a prime accused in the ambush attack on a police patrol party at Tapa Darenchi village on the road from Mendipather to Songsak in which three police constables died and their weapons including AKs and INSAS rifles were taken away.
