From Our Correspondent

NONGPOH: Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh on Monday warned of stern action against the perpetrators of Saturday’s petrol bomb attack at Rajabagan market in Ri-Bhoi district.

“Those involved in the attack will be brought to book,” Lyngdoh said after taking stock of the situation in Rajabagan.

“The situation is returning to normal,” the Home Minister said adding “as a precautionary measure two platoons of Meghalaya Police will continue to remain in the area to ensure normalcy.”

Lyngdoh directed the Ri-Bhoi police to speed up its investigation and to bring those attackers to book. He said 61 persons camping at the relief camp set up by the authorities in the village were treated well.

Miscreants believed to be members of the HNYF) hurled petrol bombs at the Rajabagan market in Ri Bhoi district, damaging 87 shops belonging to different communities and damaged four motorcycles parked in one of the shops. They also set on fire another motorcycle which was driving past and torched a thatched hut near the main road on Saturday at around 1 pm.

Following the incident, the district administration arrested more than 30 HNYF members who were, later, released.

Later addressing a public meeting convened by the Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong, the Home Minister urged the local people to maintain communal harmony.

He assured that the State government would take an initiative to grant compensation to affected families.

The deputy commissioner Akash Deep Singh said, “The loss assessment is on and we hope to complete it within a day or two.” (With inputs from agencies)
