SHILLONG: Expressing satisfaction over the tradition of the indigenous tribes of Meghalaya, Nongstoin MLA Hoping Stone Lyngdoh said the Hynniewtrep community of State preferred to stick to the tradition by taking the clan name from the mother’s side and this tradition continues to these days. Speaking at the annual get-together of Hima Langrin Youth Welfare Association at Shillong Club here on Saturday, Lyngdoh said Meghalaya, being a matrilineal society gives a lot of liberty and rights to women including the inheritance of family property.

He also mentioned that the nations of the world had become patriarchal a long time back due to political and economic reasons.

The octogenarian urged students to pursue activities which would help them to achieve the right kind of education for the greater good of the community.

Highlighting the abundant natural resources including fertile land and precious minerals in the West Khasi Hills district, KSU president Samuel Jyrwa lamented the fact that this area is still lagging far behind the other districts in term of education, road communication and health care.

He suggested that the organization approach the State Government with their problems and demand corrective action.

Later, the local MLA gave away mementoes to students who had passed with flying colours in the last SSLC Examination 2011.
