SHILLONG: Political parties and  the North East Students’ Union  (NESO) have strongly objected to the  move of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC)’s  approval of  the  draft citizenship amendment Bill,  2016.

NESO Chairman, Samuel Jyrwa  on Thursday said that the move of the JPC came despite the fact that many NGOs had protested and submitted their representation to the Committee against the Bill

Accusing the JPC of doing mere formality without any seriousness on the matter, Jyrwa said that their approval showed that they had already made up their mind on the matter before hearing the stakeholders

“ It shows the attitude of the Central Government towards the indigenous people of the North East and this will only alienate the people of the region further,” he said.

Stating that the NESO has taken the matter seriously, he added that the organisation would meet soon to chalk out its next course of action on the matter.

On the other hand, political Adviser  to the Chief Minister of Meghalaya  and a senior leader of United Democratic Party (UDP), Allantry Dkhar said that the JPC’s approval only showed that the Union Government was not concerned about the region as a whole.
