SHILLONG: The BJP legislator and minister, AL Hek, has asserted that he is with the people of the state on the issue of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, amid pressure groups’ demand for his removal from the Cabinet.
Talking to media persons on Tuesday, Hek while clearing his stand said the state government has sent a clear message to the NDA that it is against the bill. He added that the Meghalaya Cabinet had passed a resolution to oppose it and he too was part of that particular meeting.
When asked if he would resign from the party, he said, “Why should I resign?” On being asked about the demands of the NGOs to drop him from the Cabinet, Hek said though he has nothing to say on that but his stand is very clear that he is with the state and its people.
Meanwhile, the Lok Janshakti party in Meghalaya has decided to communicate to its central high command to oppose the bill in the Rajya Sabha.
“We are of the view that the Citizenship Amendment Bill is not in the interest of the local people of the North East,” a statement issued by the party said.
The state committee of the party would also suggest the Home Ministry to discuss the bill thoroughly with protesting organisations.
The party also condemned the lawlessness in Assam and other parts of the North East and has appealed to the protesting organisations to not take law in their hands.
