SHILLONG: Assembly Speaker Donkupar Roy has stated that there is need to discourage large scale import of livestock and stressed on the need to put in more efforts to raise the standards and productivity of local farmers.
Roy made the statement while addressing over 100 farmers from villages under the Shella Bholaganj C&RD Block during a one day block level Livestock Mela at Saitsohpen Community Hall, Sohra on Friday.
Highlighting the problem the government faces, he said the high cost of livestock feed is further aggravated as the farmers would have to sell their products at a very low cost due to the large control of the market by suppliers from outside the state, adding that the government needs to address the issue.
