Acute water shortage taking toll on Tura residents

From Our Correspondent

TURA: The acute shortage of potable water in Tura Urban area for the past four weeks has started to take its toll on its residents.

The water shortage has become so acute that some residents have resorted to go without lunch altogether to conserve whatever water is left at their homes.

Concerned citizens have approached the Chief Engineer, PHE, Shillong to look into the matter and have been assured that appropriate measures will be taken immediately.

However the department is yet to make good its promise.

To protest against this delay, a former MLA and President of Garo National Council, Clifford R Marak has resolved to stage a hunger strike in front of the office of the Executive Engineer, PHE, Tura Division from March 6.

Speaking to The Shillong Times, he informed that the CE, PHE, Shillong had assured him that the department would look into the matter as soon as possible. However, the assurance was yet to materialize, Marak said.

The former MLA said that he would stage a hunger strike from 7am to 5pm.

Exhibition: The District-Level Exhibition for Inspire Awardees 2011-2012 was organized by the District School Education Officer, Tura, at Hawakhana Deficit Higher Secondary School, Tura on Friday.

The Inspire Awardees programme was in realization of the Vision 2020, a flagship programme of the government of India under the aegis of Science and Technology.

Additional Director of School Education and Literacy, Tura, CW Momin, attended the inauguration programme as the chief guest.
