SHILLONG: Majority of population in Meghalaya is yet to enroll themselves with Aadhaar even though there is no more opposition to the enrolment from the pressure groups.
The pressure groups in the state were initially averse to the idea of implementing Aadhaar in the state.
However, the opposition has subsided but the number of people enrolling for Aadhaar in Meghalaya is just 28.2 percent.
The website of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) in its statewide Aadhaar saturation report says that in Meghalaya, out of the total projected population of 3,276,323, Aadhaar cards have been assigned to 923452 which stand at 28.2 per cent.
The Aadhaar Saturation in 0-5 years of age band is mere 0.5 per cent with 2433 assigned Aadhaar cards out of a population of 448,950.
As per the report, the Aadhaar Saturation in 5-18 years of age band is 17.1 per cent with 184951 assigned cards out of a population of 1,080,531.
Earlier, quite a few number of people had joined the campaign against Aadhaar and many people had expressed their willingness to opt out of Aadhaar.
Considered a proof of residence and not a proof of citizenship, Aadhaar does not itself grant any rights to domicile in India.
