BJP legislator in Assam speaks against Citizenship Bill

GUWAHATI:  Sitting ruling BJP legislator from Lahowal constituency in Assam, Rituparna Baruah has spoken against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 even as protests against the bill is gaining momentum in the state.

In a recent meeting the BJP legislator  stated  as the  people of the state were  opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016, it would not be possible to ignore the people’s sentiment.

He stated that the bill would affect  Assam Accord, which the BJP had promised to implement in toto before the Assembly election in 2016.

Earlier, another BJP MLA, Padma Hazarika, who represents Sootea constituency, had dropped hint to also dropped hint to go against the Bill.  He said “I am with the people of Assam and my stand will be same as the stand of the people,” said Hazarika recently although he did not mention anything about the Bill.

Meanwhile, various political and apolitical organisations  in Assam including pressure groups like Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity (KMSS), AAASU, AJYCP and opposition political parties including the Congress and AGP have intensified the agitation against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 that has been passed in Lok Sabha on January 8 last.
