SHILLONG: The Confederation of Hynniewtrep Social Organisations (CoHSO) has urged the government, the press fraternity and individuals to appeal to the Supreme Court to stay or quash the order of the High Court of Meghalaya on bandhs and road blockades.
In a statement issued here on Wednesday, CoHSO chairman Robertjune Kharjahrin expressed shock as the media is being prevented from writing about peaceful public rallies and hunger strikes.
Kharjahrin said the meetings that CoHSO is planning in different places and the hunger strike on January 24, 25 and 26 “will be peaceful”.
The CoHSO meetings will be held in Jowai (January 18), Umsning and Khliehriat (January 21) and Mawkyrwat and Nongstoin (January 23).
The leader added that the public meeting on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill will be a legal awareness programme.
The East Khasi Hills SP has reminded all protesters about the standing order of the High Court against calling any form of strike or road blockade. The court order also restrains print and electronic media from publicising bandhs, hartals or road blockades. The pressure groups have claimed that the order violates the constitutional right to assemble peacefully and without arms.
