SHILLONG: The People’s Democratic Front (PDF) of Meghalaya has shot off a letter to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi rejecting the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), 2016.

The letter signed by the president, Ivanlumlang Marbaniang and general secretary, Auspicious Lyngdoh expressed its utmost disappointment and complete rejection of the Bill.

The leaders maintained that they had formed the party to ensure safety and security of the indigenous people and their rights and unanimously decided to oppose the implementation of the Bill.

According to the party, the CAB will shatter the very spirit of secularism provided under the Indian Constitution and threatens the unique identity of the tribal people and subsequently, ethnic clashes will disrupt peace and harmony in the state.

The PDF added that the Bill would cause serious changes in the population dynamics of the state which would lead to regressive economic scenario in the state.

The regional party predicted an unsustainable environment due to overexploitation of the state’s resources caused by population explosion.
