SHILLONG: The Langrin Youth Welfare Association (LYWA) argued that the two-lane road project from Nongstoin-Wahkaji-Ranikor is meant to facilitate uranium mining and influx of Bangladeshi migrants into the state.
In a statement issued here, LYWA president BS Lyngdoh reiterated their opposition to uranium mining and claimed that the association has support of the residents of West and South West Khasi Hills districts.
“The aim of bringing in the road project is to facilitate mining of uranium and to pave the way for Bangladeshis. We do not need the road project but we need the existing road to be repaired,” he said.
According to him, the situation will be aggravated following the move of the Centre to proceed with the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) South West Khasi Hills and KSU Umdohlun circle also expressed their opposition to the two-lane road project by staging a sit-in demonstration in front of the deputy commissioner’s office in Mawkyrwat on Wednesday.
