Wife-burning case: Husband arrested

 SHILLONG: In a dowry related case, Jhalupara Police on Monday arrested one Md Nafees of Barapather for allegedly trying to burn his wife Shagufta Parveen alive by pouring kerosene on her body on Sunday night.

Police also registered a case against four other members of the family -Nasimun Nisa, Kaikasha Parveen, Md Liyaqat and Md Shafiq.

Arrest was made after the victim’s family filed an FIR in Jhalupara Outpost on Monday.

Policy also arrested bother of Shagufta — Md Shahbaz, after Nafees’ family filed a counter FIR alleging that he had ransacked their house.

The 20-year-old Shagufta, mother of one, was married to Nafees three years back. Her in-laws and her husband started torturing her demanding dowry soon after the marriage.

Shagufta, who at present is undergoing treatment in Shillong Civil Hospital, was rescued by her neighbours and her brother.Shagufta alleged that she had been tortured mercilessly by her husband.Both the arrested persons will be produced in the court on Tuesday, police said.
