Guwahati: Assam government on Monday said the law and order situation in the state had improved considerably and violence perpetrated by extremist outfits subsided.

“The government in the past decade had taken several steps to maintain law and order despite the presence of various extremist groups and violence has been contained,” Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain on behalf of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, told the State Assembly here.

“The situation has improved since what it was in the 1990s (when the opposition Asom Gana Parishad was in power) and our government has taken steps to ensure safety of the common people,” Hussain said.

Stating the government was open for talks with any extremist outfit, the minister invited the anti-talk faction of ULFA led by its elusive ‘commander-in-chief’ Paresh Baruah for negotiation.

“We’ll take every group into confidence and have negotiations with them to solve their demands,” he said.

Replying to another question, the minister said steps had been taken to fill up posts vacant in the police department. (PTI)
