Kohima: Nagaland State Election Commission has fixed April 23 as the date for three Municipal and sixteen Town Council elections.

Official sources said the notification in this regard would be issued on March 16 followed by publication of election programme from March 17 to 28 next.

The filing of nomination papers would be from March 27 to 31 next and the Scrutiny would be taken up on April 3.

The sources informed while the application for revision of order of the authority scrutinising the nomination needs to be filed from April 4 to 7, the revision applications shall be decided on April 9.

The last date of withdrawal of Nomination Papers has been fixed on April 11 and the campaign period from April 12 to 22 next, official sources said, adding the date of election is April 23 and the date of re-poll has been given on April 24.

The counting would be taken on April 25.

The elections were kept in abeyance for some years due to the disagreement of the implementation of the 33 per cent Women Reservation seats in all 19 civic bodies, however, the Nagaland Government got a shot in hands following the order of the Guahati High Court on October 21 last year, which had ordered to held the Civic Body elections with implementation of the 33 per cent seat reservation for women.

Accordingly, the government had notified on November 17 that the civic election be held with women reservation as per schedule to be decided by the State Election Commission.

The government also declared out of 229 wards of the 19 civic bodies, 80 seats would be reserved for women.

This would be the first ever civic bodies elections with 33 per cent Women Reservation in Nagaland and would also be a popularity test for two major political parties, the ruling Naga Peoples’ Front (NPF) and the opposition Congress. (UNI)
