SHILLONG: Governor Tathagata Roy, during his speech on Republic Day, recollected an incident from his childhood and his impression of the then Assam governor. Roy, who had spent the early years of his life at Lower Jail Road in the city, said in 1951, he had gone to Polo Grounds with his mother and a cousin to watch the Republic Day celebrations. He was only six years old.
“We saw the Governor of Assam, Shri Jairamdas Daulatram, taking the salute and I pestered my mother with questions about the Governor,” Roy reminisced and added that he was impressed to see that the governor’s car did not have any number plate but the word ‘Assam’ in its place.
“Little could I imagine that one day, nearly 70 years later, I will be standing here to take the salute. These old memories have endeared the town of Shillong to me as no other town has,” he said.
The governor also did not forget to mention about the greenery in the city.
