SHILLONG: East Khasi Hills police will get smarter and more tech-savvy under the chief minister’s ambitious 100 Days programme.
The district police are working on three projects — the first responder project, connecting with people through social media and introduction of e-challan.
SP Davis Marak on Tuesday said Shillong police have seven traffic branches, each divided into zones and sectors. Under the first responder project, each sector will be given a motorcycle and the biker cops will be the first one to respond to any traffic accidents in respective areas. Altogether 16 bikes will be put into service.
The department is in the process of procuring the bikes and designing special uniforms for the riders. The first responders will also be given better communication equipment to attend to any issues at the earliest.
Talking about the second project, Marak said the Facebook page of Shillong Traffic Police is up and running. Updates about the traffic situation in the city are being uploaded for the public and “the police will also have its presence on Twitter where important press releases, lookout notices and other information will be posted”.
Another project on which the police are working is e-challan, or issuance of challans in an electronic format to any traffic violator. “We are in the final stage and the NIC is preparing the software,” said Marak.
E-challan will be a joint project of the Transport Department, NIC and the district police and the handheld machines are being procured by the Transport Department
Marak also said the district police in the long run is contemplating digital platform for crime record by upgrading its crime database which would also help the police in issuing character certificate and verification process.
