Headman, banker arrested

 SHILLONG: Police on Wednesday arrested two persons — K Khongjee and Abbotstar Khardewsaw, headman of Rimai village, Pynursula and a former branch manager of Meghalaya Cooperative Apex Bank respectively, on the charges of fraudulently debiting a huge sum of money from the account of a Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) beneficiary. The victim, a lady whose identity police refused to disclose, had lodged a complaint last month saying that Rs 6, 20, 406 was debited from her account out of Rs 9, 50,00 sanctioned to her under the scheme. Acting on the complaint, police arrested the duo on Wednesday from Shillong. The duo had been remanded to a five-day judicial custody.
