SHILLONG: The security guard deployed for activist Amita Sangma resorted to blank fire allegedly in an inebriated condition on Friday afternoon at her residence in Madanrting causing panic among the children of the activist, besides the residents.
He has been identified as T Wahlang.
The assault incident involving Amita and Agnes Kharshiing on November 8 had prompted the police to provide two security personnel each to the duo.
The incident took place when Amita was not at home.
The panic-stricken children called up their mother narrating about the incident which compelled her to rush home.
Amita, quoting her children, said the policeman wanted to shoot a dog nearby. However, the children pleaded him not to do so but the police man fired.
Though no one was injured in the incident, it created panic in the locality.
Amita sought immediate replacement of the guard. “I don’t want inebriated persons to be deployed,” she said. According to Amita, she had aired her grievances about the policemen guarding her and the family with the authorities concerned but in vain.
Soon after the incident, police visited the site and the weapon used by the constable was taken away.
Police downplayed the incident and wanted to hush up the matter.
When contacted, a police official said it was an “accidental incident” and there was no intention on the part of the cop to hurt anybody.
Officials said the police was trying to clean his weapon but it misfired.
