SHILLONG: The state government has notified the Meghalaya building by laws, 2011 (amended in 2015) to entrust the district councils to look after building permission in scheduled areas and MUDA in municipal areas.
In a notification issued on Friday, the Principal Secretary of the Urban Affairs said the Meghalaya Urban Development Authority has been notified about implementing the building bylaws in municipal and scheme areas and autonomous district councils will deal with areas excluding the other two.
The notification said those who want to apply for building permission in their respective areas may approach either of the two authorities for obtaining their sanction of building permission and occupancy certificates.
Earlier, in a meeting between the department and the three chiefs of JHADC, KHADC and GHADC and leaders of the Synjuk Ki Nongsynshar Shnong Ka Bri U Hynniewtrep, the department had decided to empower the district councils.
Recently, the Cabinet had approved the proposal of the Urban Affairs Department to allow district councils to grant building permission in non-municipal areas.
