Only two file nomination for council polls on first day

SHILLONG: Only two nominations were filed on the first day of filing of nominations for the forthcoming KHADC elections here on Saturday.

In the morning,  Fantin Joseph Lakadong, husband of Congress MLA, Ampareen Lyngdoh filed his nominations as Congress candidate from Laitumkhrah constituency. Later, he said that he would raise different issues including the plight of farmers in the state

Later in the evening, sitting MDC from Nongthymmai, Latiplang Kharkongor who is contesting the election as independent candidate also filed his nominations here at the DC office

He was accompanied by his supporters.

Later, Kharkongor said that the role of an MDC was to perform their duties as per  the provisions of the Sixth Schedule. He also said that his agenda would be about forest mining and others.

The last day of filing of nominations is February 7 while the scrutiny will be held on February 8  and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is February 9.

The model code of conduct for the MDC elections has been enforced and the elections will be held on February 27 while the counting of votes will take place on March 2
